Andy Hamilton Appointment Expands Leadership Team & Aligns Arlington/Roe for Future Growth

Arlington/Roe, managing general agent and wholesale insurance broker, expands its leadership team and aligns for future growth and perpetuation with the appointment of Andy Hamilton, CIC, as Transportation Manager.

Over the past 10 years, Arlington/Roe has grown exponentially from 119 associates to 189 and from $112 million in premium to $215 million. Notably, the company is still independent, family-owned and two of President and CEO Jim Roe’s sons, Andy and Patrick Roe, are serving in leadership roles.

“I am excited to have Andy come on board and look forward to many years of productive, profitable growth in our Transportation practice area,” Jim Roe said. “I believe Andy Hamilton has the experience and skills to help us grow.”

Andy has prior leadership experience as the branch manager of the Ohio office at J.M. Wilson Corp., and he has a wide variety of experience on the company, agency and E&S sides. He was responsible for all production in several states, and he led a team whose majority of premium was in transportation business.

Before moving to Columbus in 2017, Andy was the sales and agency relations manager for J.M. Wilson in Indiana and Ohio. He also has experience as a territory manager in Indiana with Liberty Mutual/Safeco and as a risk management consultant with the Henriott Group. He holds a Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation.

A native Hoosier, Andy hails from Knightstown, Indiana. He is a graduate of Indiana University, Bloomington, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in criminal justice and a minor in Spanish.

Andy’s favorite aspect of his chosen career is the people he has met. Given his varied career path, he says he has met some of the most amazing people and shared in their success. He is also fascinated by the continually evolving nature of the insurance industry, and he enjoys finding new solutions for the risks that emerge as a result of the changing world.

Andy and his wife, Rachel, have a seven-year-old daughter and a four-year-old son. He says that any free time he gets to spend with his family is compound interest in his life. He is a homebrewer, he loves to play guitar, and he stays very active with running, the occasional triathlon and lifting weights. He is also an avid Dodgers and Hoosiers fan!

Celebrating Founder’s Day

graphic with two people smiling at the camera and a picture of the original Arlington/Roe office with text about Founder's Day

A few years ago, we begin to celebrate Founder’s Day on Francis Roe’s birthday, August 13. He would have been 97 this year. Unfortunately, we couldn’t physically be together to celebrate, but we still came together in our hearts.

We are an especially unique and privileged company because we are third-generation family-owned, and we have always been independent.

Our company is based on a foundation of honesty, integrity, respect and trust. We are celebrating 56 years of Doing the Right Thing. On August 13, we celebrated our roots through Francis and our company’s future growth with Jim.

Beginning with the phrase, “Ruth, I just quit my job,” in a small house in Indianapolis to nine offices across the Midwest, the history of our company shows where we began and how much we have grown.

A message from Jim Roe, President & CEO

closeup of multiracial people holding hands

Arlington/Roe recognizes supporting diversity and inclusiveness is not only the right thing to do, it is the right thing to do for our business.

“Doing the Right Thing” is woven into our core pillars of honesty, integrity, and trust. During this painful and challenging time in which so many of us are grappling with the realities of racial and social injustice, racism or social injustice are not acceptable in our company. We respect each other’s different capabilities, abilities, and backgrounds. Our different backgrounds and perspectives are what make each of us unique, and it is our individual differences that make us stronger as a team.

We stand with anyone who has been discriminated against, and we acknowledge that it is wrong. As we look inward at our hearts, we encourage you to do the same. Let’s do less talking, more listening and be open to a change of heart. We are responsible to treat everyone with respect regardless of what we look like, where we come from, who we love or anything that makes us different. We, as a society, can and must do better.

For some of us, doing better means finding the courage to stand up and speak out. For others, it means patiently listening with empathy. For all of us, it means opening dialogue by asking questions, respecting answers, being open to different perspectives, and, most importantly, appreciating one another’s contributions to our Arlington/Roe family.

We are a family-owned company that strives to do what is right for our coworkers, our agency partners and our communities. We have been Doing the Right thing since 1964, but we must continue to educate ourselves, others and do more.

Management Liability in the COVID-19 pandemic world

two people sitting on a bus with masks on on their phone

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many Management Liability underwriters are becoming more restrictive by increasing premiums and restricting terms. Because the world economy was hit hard by this sudden slowdown, insurance carriers are reevaluating their underwriting guidelines. A risk that was acceptable in January or February is now seeing double-digit premium increases if not outright declinations.

Here are a few examples of what underwriters are worried about.

Directors & Officers Liability

Merger or acquisition: litigation over the “new” value of the company being acquired.

Preparation for the pandemic: litigation over the company’s preparation (or lack thereof) for the pandemic. Lost revenue, increased expenses, employee & customer safety, company image, etc.

Employment Practices Liability

Downsizing: Allegations over how the downsizing/furloughed employees were determined (i.e. discrimination).

Recalled Employees: Allegation that employees that were recalled from furlough where chosen (i.e. discrimination).

Cyber Liability

Ransomware: Increased exposure to phishing attacks with a larger number of employees working remotely from home.

We have access to many standard and surplus lines carriers that can help your client through this situation. Give us a call, and ask for help with your new
business opportunities and renewal accounts.
